This may seem like an oxymoron to you, however, being aggressive against the attacks of the enemy is a position of rest. Believing the Word of God brings you to a place of rest. You rest because you believe. Believing brings you into a place of acting, speaking and thinking in a way that lines up with the Word, and causes your emotions to line up as well.
Hebrews 4:10 describes a rest from self-effort: “Resting from the weariness of human labors”. This is what it means to “enter into rest” (Hebrews 4:1). This is to enter into God’s kingdom right here on this earth as you believe in Jesus and His finished work of the cross. Colossians 1:13 states that as a child of God you have already been “transferred into the kingdom of the Son of His (God’s) love”. You have been raised up together with Jesus and seated with Him at the right hand of the Father (Ephesians 2:6). God made you alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ;” (Ephesians 2:5). These are the things that have already been accomplished for you through Jesus, providing you the opportunity to rest, if you believe His Word. All of these things are speaking about your spirit. Let’s go a little deeper into this.
God rested because His work was finished (Genesis 2:3). Jesus died on the cross and confirmed that His work was finished (John 19:30). You benefit from Jesus’ finished work, which is your inheritance, a gift of grace, your salvation. Based on His finished work, you rest. In fact, Galatians 2:20 says that “you were crucified with Christ”, speaking about your old nature, who you previously were in your spirit. Now, “you no longer live, but it is Christ Who lives in you”; you are a new creation in Him! What does this mean and how does it relate to rest? In your spirit, you are one with Jesus Christ the moment that you believed in Him as God’s Son, that He lived, died and rose from the dead for you. In your spirit you and Jesus are united; you are God’s own handiwork (Ephesians 2:10)! This uniting means that you share in all of His attributes and benefits of Who He is. Therefore, you rest in your new life seated at the right hand of the Father, because that is where Jesus is seated (Ephesians 1:20; 2:6). There in that position, united with Jesus and seated at the Father’s right hand, everything you need for life and godliness has been provided for you (2 Peter 1:3). Knowing this is your position in the spirit, and through Jesus everything is done and waiting for you to receive it, allows you to rest and not strive to obtain something, because you already have it! Everything you need is in your spirit available for you to live from this abundance! The rest of the Christian journey is one of faith, of receiving revelation from God, and learning to release from your spirit all that Jesus has provided.
In summary, you are equipped for rest because:
You possess divine fullness (2 Peter 1:4).
You have resurrection power (Ephesians 1:19).
You possess the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23).
You possess the gift of salvation: everything that you need for your well-being;
forgiveness, protection, provision, healing. Because as Jesus is, so are you in this
world (1 John 4:17). How is Jesus right now? That is how you are because the Word says so!
The key to rest is hearing the Father’s voice through His Word, and when you hear it not to harden you heart in unbelief (Hebrews 4:7). A hardened heart develops from not listening to the Word, refusing to be compliant or persuaded by it (Hebrews 3:18); not believing what it says. “So, we see that they (the Israelites) were not able to enter (into His rest) because of their unwillingness to adhere to and trust in and rely on God; (unbelief had shut them out)” (Hebrews 3:19; Numbers 14:1-35). So, hearing the Word and believing it, are keys to entering into God’s rest. “For he who has once entered (God’s) rest also has ceased from the (weariness and pain) of human labors, just as God rested from His” (Hebrews 4:10).
To rest, is to know that you are a powerhouse against the enemy by the provision given to you through Jesus. At rest, which is confidence in the Lord, you are in a place of hearing God and believing what He says. You are fully equipped for kingdom life right here on this earth!
Your secure place is in the finished work accomplished by Christ. Your dependency upon Him is not bondage, but freedom, freedom to rest while you enjoy the abundance that He has prepared for you. You are free to live from His fullness. Freedom to rest gives you opportunity to live an extraordinary life in Him, out of the control of the enemy. Even in the midst of challenges, trials or temptations, this freedom gives you confidence and boldness against the defeated foe who no longer has the power to take advantage of you. You are fully equipped to live this life of rest empowered and bold. This all comes from a place of abiding in the Source; you rest in His might and provision, in His equipping. This is why you can truly say, “I am at rest”. God’s work is finished and therefore, you are no longer in human strength because of what He has done. You are in His strength! You are at rest from the weariness and pain of human labors…
