I have an app on my phone that allows me to view the night sky: the planets, moon, star patterns, and even the space station are noted. Gazing upward celestial perfection is before me. Last night, I observed Mars and Jupiter, visible to the naked eye. The app illustrates the actual appearance of the planet I am looking at and its location. The Bible tells me this marvelous site that has captured my attention, is the artistry of Jesus Christ; “…He created the worlds and the reaches of space and the ages of time (He made, produced, built, operated, and arranged them in order” (Amplified Hebrews 1:2). The heavens declare His magnificence! No wonder Jude confirms, “To the one only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory (splendor), majesty, might and dominion, and power and authority, before all time and now and forever” (Amplified Jude 1:25).
We are witness to the power of God as we observe the heavens and earth and everything in it. But God leaves the pursuit of this truth to our discovery; Who is this God? “Be still, and know that I am God;” He instructs us in Psalm 46:10. It is an invitation to know Him intimately, to know His greatness. “I will be exalted among the nations”; “I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10)! He is confirming that He is worthy of our honor and praise. He is confirming that He is worthy of our trust. It is by knowing His ability, His splendor, majesty, power, and authority, that we recognize this. And the foundation of His greatness is His love for us!
As we learn about the Lord, we grow in understanding of His magnificence. Growing in understanding we know that He is capable and trustworthy. So, when He instructs us to be humble before Him, we can take this position; “…humble yourself under the mighty hand of God…” (1 Peter 5:6). We can humble ourselves because we have gained knowledge through intimacy that He is mighty! Therefore, we can rest in His presence by the ease of His grace. We are certain, that His might, provision, care, strength, and love are always available and at work in our lives.
To humble ourselves means we cast our entire care, all of our worries, anxieties, and concerns on Him because He is more than capable of caring for us. Because of His love, He is watchful over us. (1 Peter 5:7)
“I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14) God tells Moses. This confirms God’s supremacy, His character, and the very excellence of His nature. In all circumstances God is supreme; He is the Greater One! To know this, we must be humble before Him. Each time we acknowledge Him with honor, we permit Him to work on our behalf; we experience victory, and a calm and peace are released. God is Who He says that He is! Despite all circumstances, He is God forever, unchanging. The proof of His authority is especially noticed by the victory of the cross, of Jesus' suffering, death, and resurrection. His purpose prevailed over evil, despite how the situation appeared.
The more we know these truths, the more we trust Him and rest. This is not something we strive for by self-effort, but something we pursue; we are persistent in pursuing intimacy with the Lord, seeking Him as our vital necessity. “…we run with patient endurance and steady and active persistence the appointed course of the race that is set before us,” (Hebrews 12:1). And He makes us capable of doing this. “(Not in your own strength) for it is God Who is all the while effectually at work in us (energizing and creating in us the power and desire), both to will and to work for His good pleasure and satisfaction and delight (Amplified Philippians 2:13). The work of His power within us is based on intimacy, knowledge of Him, and His perfect unconditional love (Ephesians 3:19,20). He is mighty and He is able!
